Balance PDF file size against image clarity

Compress PDF processes one document with a low, medium or high compression setting. Scans, photographs and other high-resolution imagery usually offer the largest saving, while a text-heavy or already optimized PDF may change very little.

A stronger setting can re-encode embedded images more aggressively, so the smallest output is not automatically the best result. Zoom in on signatures, fine print, barcodes and stamps before relying on a compressed copy for an official submission.

Practical checklist

  • Start with the medium setting and move to high only when the result still exceeds the destination's upload limit.
  • Compare both byte size and representative pages at 100% or greater zoom; a useful reduction should not make essential details hard to read.
  • If an optimized PDF barely shrinks, avoid repeated compression and reduce oversized source images in the document's original authoring application instead.
